From 2015 to 2018, the Caregivers’ Journeys Study of the Migrant Mothers Project looked at how Canada’s temporary foreign worker program exacerbates and normalizes the risk for abuse, exploitation and the loss of immigration status for live-in-caregivers, especially after policy changes in the Live-In Caregiver Program in 2014 and in the announcement of closing the Caregiver Program in February this year. These study findings have since been published in the Journal of Family Violence.
We are now presenting an infographic created from these findings to raise awareness on the topic of workplace abuse and exploitation faced by migrant caregivers from their employers due to the current policy context. We hope this infographic can be used to encourage conversations within the caregiver community, service providers and the broader public, while supporting on-going migrant workers campaigns that address the backlog of PR applications and call for a Federal Workers Program for Caregivers with PR upon entry for caregivers and their families.
We hope this will become a helpful resource for conversations to support
the on-going migrant workers campaigns.
